Taking your Dog or Cat to Australia

If you have a much-loved dog, cat or other pet that is part of your family, you’ll want to take them with you to Australia.

Before you do anything, talk to your vet about your pet’s health and how it will cope with the long and, possibly stressful journey to Australia, as well as 30 days of quarantine on arrival in Australia. Consider whether there is someone here in the UK who would make a wonderful adoptive ‘parent’ and who could provide a comfy new home for your dog or cat.

Also consider the whole cost of transporting a pet to Australia, not just the airfare. There will be vets fees for micro chipping, vaccination and blood tests, the cost of an Import Permit, quarantine costs, possibly licensing or registration costs in Australia. In addition to all this, you might want to take out pet insurance in case anything goes wrong.

The Australian Quarantine and Inspection Service (AQIS) is the government agency that deals with the importation of animals. You might want to have a look at their website which is very informative. www.aqis.gov.au

There are several companies in the UK who deal with dog or cat transfers to Australia, and they can handle all of the necessary procedures for you, including health checks and vaccinations. It is advisable to get details from more than one company to ensure that you get the best value for you and the best conditions for your dog, cat or pet.
